Skilled Workers: Language Requirements

The Language Skills Factor is one of the factors for which points are awarded by Visa Officers in determining whether a Skilled Worker applicant will be accepted or refused.

Applicant will be awarded up to 24 points under the Language Skills Factor based upon the applicant's ability to speak Canada's two official languages. The applicant may indicate either the English or French language as the first or second language for the purpose of being assessed under the Language Skills Factor.

Applicant will be given points based on their ability to:

  • listen;
  • speak;
  • read; and
  • write.

To make the assessment as accurate as possible, we would recommend the following definitions:

  • High proficiency: very good command of the language in a range of social and work situations, and no difficulty communicating in a professional capacity.
  • Moderate proficiency: can communicate reasonably well on a range of general topics, about personal and familiar things.
  • Basic: can communicate in a very limited way.
