Immigration Family Sponsorship: Basic Needs
By signing Undertaking with the Canadian government and the Agreement with the sponsored relatives the sponsor takes financial responsibility for Family Class relatives immigrating to Canada. The sponsor agrees to assist Family Class relatives for the period, during which time they must not depend on social assistance from the government. The sponsor agrees to give shelter to the sponsored relatives and provide their other living expenses as necessary. Those include food, clothing and other basic requirements of everyday living, medical care, including dental and eye care and other health needs which are not covered by public health services available to all Canadian citizens and permanent residents. However, if the sponsored relatives are able and find the way to support themselves the sponsor will not have to provide for their essential needs. If the sponsor fails to honour his financial obligations, the sponsored relatives can apply for social assistance from the Canadian government. If the sponsored relatives apply for social assistance, the sponsor is considered in default and may be taken to court. The government can make him to repay the funds they spent for the relatives.
