To qualify as Self-Employed Immigrant under the Federal program an applicant must have the intention and ability to create their own Canadian employment. They are expected to create a business in Canada that will contribute to the cultural or athletic life of the country. They may also create their own Canadian employment by purchasing and managing a farm in Canada.

Applicant can succeed in the category if they have relevant experience in cultural activities, athletics or farm management which means that applicant must have at least two years of experience in the period beginning five years before the date of application for a permanent resident visa and ending on the day a determination is made in respect of the application, in the following types of experience:

• self-employment in cultural activities or in athletics, and
• participation at a world-class level in cultural activities or athletics, or
• farm management experience.

No immigrations conditions are imposed on Self-employed Immigrants.
